EVERDAY RELICS
Exhibition that reveals Manchester's history via the power of touch and projection mapping
As artists in residence, we responded to the handling collection at the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester, selecting artefacts that are, or were at one time, considered 'everyday'.
With the chosen artefacts we scripted narratives relating to stories of their use, painting pictures of different times in Manchester’s history. The narratives were accompanied by bespoke projections that combined archival material with oral histories and animation. Visitors were invited to pick up and examine the objects, move each tray to a central desk and watch as animations and photographs appear in front of them to reveal the secrets and illustrate the stories of each object.
Giving visitors access to these objects was an integral part of this exhibition combining physical objects with digital story-telling. By holding something in your hands, you gain a direct connection to the lives of those who have touched and used it before you.
Each of these often overlooked objects tells an important story about Manchester's industrial past, its role as a modern city and about the lives of its people.
Perhaps it will encourage you to think about the everyday relics in your own lives?
