We were asked by Filament to design and build a tourable listening booth, inspired by old Telephone Exchange machines, which plays a selection of recordings made by children.
Use one plug to choose a theme and the other to choose a recording.
The listening booth contains 36 different recordings that are grouped into four themes - School, Friends & Family, Lockdown Life and The Future.
Below are a few recordings from the booth for you to listen to online:
“The Exchange was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and national lockdown. However, as the project shifted to respond to this ‘new reality’, Stand + Stare were flexible, and understanding, and collaborated with us to create a final installation that is covid-secure, whilst also being high quality, creating something that we are extremely proud of. ”
“Working with Stand + Stare was great, their experience as theatre practitioners meant they really understood the importance of narrative within the project, this combined perfectly with their technical knowledge and expertise to produce something that harks back to telephone exchanges of old, whilst also feeling contemporary, and intriguing to our young audience.”
The Exchange was created for Filament and developed in partnership with Dee Point Primary School, Blacon, Peover Superior Primary School, Peover, and children in lockdown across Cheshire. It was made possible thanks to support from Arts Council England, Cheshire Community Foundation and Big Imaginations. We hope it stands as testament to how COVID-19 impacted on the lives of people of all ages and that in the future more space is made for children’s voices to be part of our collective conversations.
